A chaotic bunch sprint sees Max Walscheid finish in 7th place

UAE Tour

The last day of racing in the UAE Tour saw an expected sprint showdown in Dubai. An early breakaway trio escaped early on but with a number of teams wanting to set it up for their sprinters, it was never a move that had a chance of surviving.

Once into the final ten kilometres of the race the team moved to the head of the peloton en masse in an effort to position Max Walscheid for the upcoming sprint.

Team Sunweb Coach Aike Visbeek was pleased with the team work on show: “We were focussed on the sprint throughout the day and showed some good work during the stage. We moved through the bunch confidently and the sprint train was well positioned going into the final turn.”

With his team-mates helping him to position him in the finale; Walscheid managed to move up in the closing fifty metres, resulting in a seventh place finish on the day.

Visbeek continued: “We can be satisfied with our work this week, despite missing that big result. The good team-work shown makes us look forward to the races to come!”

With no gaps between the GC riders, it means that Wilco Kelderman and Tom Dumoulin finished the race fifth and sixth respectively in the overall standings.
