Team Sunweb’s Wilco Kelderman finishes stage eight of the Vuelta safe in the bunch, after a relatively quiet day in the peloton.
Three riders attacked from the gun and able to take a 12 minute lead over the peloton, the biggest advantage from a breakaway during the 2018 edition of the race. Sprinters teams began to pick up the pace and after a hard chase, the catch was eventually made with six kilometres to go.
With an uphill sprint to the line and a roundabout positioned close to the final, there was an immediate fight for position as soon as the catch was made. Team Sunweb brought Wilco Kelderman up to safety for him to finish the day tucked in the peloton.
Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek said: “Our goal today was to focus on Wilco as the final was uphill. During the stage the riders faced hot weather conditions with temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees. We dealt with the circumstances well and according the plans we made upfront. The lead out towards the last climb wasn’t perfect, but Wilco was able to move towards the last kilometre and was safe over the line. Tomorrow a really though mountain stage which will shape the GC up.”
