Team Sunweb’s Wilco Kelderman rolls home safely at the Vuelta a España’s third stage, whilst the sprinters battled it out for glory.
The third stage of the Vuelta opened with a six man move going clear, opening up an advantage that peaked at four minutes before the pace became more relaxed and the lead began to fall. As the sprinters teams ignited their chase the the gap came down to under one minute, and opportunists from the bunch counter attacked to jump across to the break.
With fresh legs the new group of nine could re-open their lead, but the sprinters were destined to have their day and things came back together for a bunch sprint. Team Sunweb’s Mike Teunissen brought German sprinter Max Walschied into position in preparation for the sprint, but the team reaped no day result. Wilco Kelderman finishes safe in the top 20 riders to remain 3rd overall at 25 seconds.
Wilco said: “Today was a tough day. The guys positioned me well and kept me out of danger. The final was pretty hectic but we got through very well.”
Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek said: “Today was a tricky day with some technical descents and some climbing early on in the stage. The final turned out to be a fast and technical one, where our focus was on Wilco and we could protect and position him very well today. We can be very happy with the teamwork from everyone here, it gives us promise for the upcoming days.”
