ABOUT Sam Oomen

Becoming a professional cyclist is a dream of many young people and for Sam Oomen his dream became reality. The 22-year-old Dutchman is multi-talented and next to cycling has a wide range of interests. He plays guitar and piano, likes to travel and enjoys cooking.

He’s completely in his element when he’s racing and is a fearless and focused rider. “I feel like I am in another world when I’m on my bike. I’m willing to give everything and always use my instinct to help me make decisions.” His talent was obvious early on in his career following multiple wins in his younger years. After he joined Team Sunweb, he continued to show strong results.

Last year Sam had a very consistent season in which he maintained strong form from the spring classics until the right up until the Tour of Lombardy. His 2017 season had only one low point, his abandon of the Vuelta a España due to illness. “I was so focused helping Wilco Kelderman for the GC. I’d trained hard for it and felt good during the first two weeks, until my sickness. Mentally this was the biggest setback in my career.”

Just a couple of weeks later, Sam showed his strength by being a part of the team that won the team time trial world championships in Bergen with the hilly terrain suiting this young climber well. “It was totally unexpected and we were all a little confused we stood on the highest step on the podium, with BMC and Team Sky below us. It was like a fairy-tale with six friends on a big adventure, it was so unreal. It was special to experience such a big victory together with the people you like so much – I will cherish that moment for the rest of my life.”

The youngster once again showed his capabilities at the end of the season during the final kilometres of the Tour of Lombardy. “My legs were really good that day. For the first time in my career I was competing for a top ten result in a monument. In hindsight, I gave a little too much before the real final started, but I’m not the kind of rider who wants to wait too long.”
