ABOUT Pernille Mathiesen

“I was eight when I first got on a bike and went for my first ride along with my father and two brothers. Initially riding my bike was just for fun but after my first race I noticed that I was actually quite good. After that, I took it more seriously and competed much more. Although it’s my profession now, I still like riding my bike just as much as I did in the early days.”

Danish Pernille Mathiesen is an up-and-coming talent and at just 19 years old she has already demonstrated her huge potential. This year she placed fourth in the Danish national road race championships and second in the time trial. After these strong results she went on to win the double at the U23 European championships, taking the victory on both the road and in the time trial.

For Pernille joining Team Sunweb is a dream come true. “I joined the team’s German Talent Days twice. I feel like I already have a good idea of how they work and about the atmosphere in the team. I have always considered Team Sunweb as the dream team. So that it’s happening now is amazing for me. There are so many strong riders that I can learn a lot from and the professional environment is perfect for me to develop into a better rider.”

As a cyclist, Pernille dreams of taking strong results during big events like world championships and the Olympics. Next to her ambitions in cycling, there’s still plenty more on her bucket list to tick off. “After my career I’d like to start a cycling café in Aarhus with friends and travel around the world. I’d also like to complete a full Ironman triathlon, like my brother does. Although running is not really my cup of tea yet.”

"This environment is perfect for me to develop"
