ABOUT Max Walscheid

A striking appearance in the peloton, Max Walscheid is a friendly and modest guy who’s always willing to work in the team’s best interest. Walscheid lives and undertook his studies in the German city of Heidelberg, “I studied Medicine here for five semesters and after my cycling career, I hope to complete my course.”

Walscheid began his cycling career relatively late after spending his younger years more interested in athletics and mountain biking. Once he was on a road bike, things changed, and his talent soon became apparent. His win at the U23 German Road Championship in 2014 attracted the attention of the team and after a few months internship, Walscheid signed a professional contract.

In 2016, his first year as a pro, the sprinter excelled in the Tour of Hainan by winning five stages as well as the green jersey. 2017 was a year of ups-and-downs for Walscheid but despite the challenges after an illness and crash during the spring, Max came back by winning a stage in the Tour of Denmark alongside a couple of strong results in the Tour of Guangxi. “Setbacks, failures and challenges motivate me. They just encourage me to work harder to beat them.”

This year Max hopes to further develop his sprint capacity and beyond this, hopes to one day take the victory on the Champs-Élysées. Of course, he realises this means he must survive three tough weeks in France, but Max doesn’t think in obstacles, he finds ways to overcome them.
