ABOUT Edward Theuns

Edward Theuns started his career on the football field and after getting on a bike, realised he had more talent on two wheels. His breakthrough was in his first year as an U23 when he won a sprint in a race in Belgium, beating Taylor Phinney and John Degenkolb. His performance caught the attention of several pro cycling teams. After a couple of years riding for Topsport Vlaanderen and Trek-Segafredo he joins Team Sunweb.

A talented classics rider with fast legs, Theuns has already taken some strong results throughout his professional career. These include second places in Scheldeprijs and Dwars door Vlaanderen and a stage win at the BinckBank Tour. After a challenging 2016 season where he crashed hard at the Tour de France breaking a vertebra, he came back after a long period of rehabilitation to ride a strong 2017 season. His recent stage win at the Tour of Turkey in 2017 was a unique farewell gift to his former team, as it was his last race wearing the colours of the team.

The 26-year-old Belgian is very enthusiastic about his involvement at Team Sunweb. “I’ve got to know the team during the talks we’ve had over the previous years and I feel like now is the right time to make the switch. The most important reason for my decision is how Team Sunweb strengthens their riders to bring them to a higher level. Together with the whole team I hope for many successes, with a focus on the Flemish races. On top, our goal is to add strength to the lead-out and further develop my sprint, which I feel like is entirely achievable with the fast men around me.”

"I’m going to further develop my sprint"
