Adriaan Helmantel started cycling at 16 years old. Always combining the sport with his studies, Adriaan undertook a Sport Education course followed by study in Human Movement Sciences. During the final parts of his studies he started his own company focused on the training and coaching of endurance athletes and began working with the Dutch Cycling Federation in several disciplines. In 2012 Adriaan joined Team Sunweb as a trainer, and is also a part of the performance team attending various races over the year as a coach.
As a youngster, Adriaan was always fascinated by the tough guns that could survive the toughest mountain stages and at 13 years old, he bought his first bike. The combination of the physical demands, tactics, teamwork, materials and the beautiful surroundings in which the sport takes place make cycling, in Adriaan’s own words: “the greatest sport there is.”
During his career Adriaan has built up various highlights. “When Marcel Kittel won the last stage of the Tour in 2013, it was the day after my first son was born. Both my son and wife were still in the hospital and I watched the finish on a very small TV in a corridor on my own. It was a really intense moment.” On top of this, Adriaan also counts Tom Dumoulin’s post-Tour-crash victory at Cumbre del Sol at the 2015 Vuelta and the double team time trial world champion title that Team Sunweb took at the 2017 worlds as other special moments in his career.
A real friendly guy, you can find Adriaan riding his road or mountain bike, or spending time as a proud father to his two sons on his days off. Outside of cycling, Adriaan is still a keen sportsman and enjoys listening to music and spending time with friends and family.
