Max Kanter was Team Sunweb’s first rider over the line after a tough uphill finish to the second stage of the Tour of Denmark in 30th position, 24 seconds down on the stage winner. With the time gaps on the line, Max loses the lead in the young rider classification.

The stage got off to a relatively steady start with five riders going clear early on and spending much of the day out front. The peloton, keen not to let the gap grow too much, worked to gradually reel the five riders in, as the tough finishing circuits loomed, with a short, sharp climb to the line each lap.

The break was down to just one rider in the final 20km with Team Sunweb assisting on the front of the peloton with the chase, while also keeping Max and Lennard Kämna well positioned at the front. Nils Eekhoff unfortunately crashed with 18km to go, leaving the team with just three riders in the slimmed down front group as the finish approached and the attacks started to fly.

Two riders pushed clear in the closing kilometres with two more jumping across on the final climb to the finish straight. Behind, the peloton split into small groups all over the road as riders fought to limit time loses. Lennard finished just a handful of seconds behind Max in 34th place.

Following the finish, Team Sunweb coach Morten Bennekou said: “We aimed to go for Nils today and planned to position him as long as possible on the finishing local lap which was pretty hard. Unfortunately Nils crashed in the worst possible moment on the lap and even a fast bike change didn’t give him the possibility to come back because of the many splits in the peloton. For the rest of the team the circuit was a bit too hard so unfortunately we came out of the day without a result. On the other hand, we improved our teamwork today and therefore can be confident going into the coming days and the possibilities we will have there.”
